December 2019 Recap

See here for event photos.

Three years running, and it was one of the best events yet! The December #ShowAndTell was also our first as Dooley Social Studio, so our team was definitely pumped. The new swag alone helped kick things up a notch!

The schedule of events included networking, an influencer panel, audience participation, and plenty of great food and drinks. Of course, our headlining speakers were fantastic, too. They came armed with amazing tips and best practices for succeeding in the social media space. They were:

FOUR Key Takeaways

1. Give attention if you expect to get attention

Ray Ball at the lecturn

Ray Ball’s presentation resonated with our team big time. Her story was all about authenticity (or, as she put it, “keep it a ‘hunnid’ with your audience at all times’ 💯). You have to build relationships intentionally over the long haul, and then your network will be ready when your biggest opportunities present themselves.

Some of the main tactics that stood out included:

  1. Personalized outreach – If someone sends a direct message to *you* specifically, the message is much more likely to resonate vs. mass messaging. Taking time to truly engage with people in a 1-on-1 way can yield big returns.

  2. Use your network to get UGC Content – Look at how to spark creativity in your circles. If you give a core group of users a small nudge or a reminder to share, the awareness and reach generated by your social media efforts can increase exponentially.

2. Stay Consistent

We were blessed to have an awesome influencer panel join Ray on stage after her talk. These guests were:

If there was one theme from the panel, it was consistency. Specifically, Bryanna and Olivia discussed tactics they use to help cultivate an audience that comes back regularly. Some of the top tips included:

  1. Establish a rhythm – Showing up at a particular time on a consistent basis allows your followers to know what to expect. Your dedicated audience members can then establish a habit of engagement.

  2. Establish a theme – When you have a consistent theme that you never miss, then your audience will know what to expect, plus you’ll always have something to post. One tip was to grab an existing hashtag but give it your own twist.

3. Hone Your Brand Truth

Rebeca Arbona is the President and Chief Truth Teller at BrandTrue—so this was an appropriate topic for her! Rebeca’s talk centered on what she calls “Brand Truth Telling.”

The primary takeaways:

  • Definition of ‘brand’ “A brand is a relationship that creates a feeling and an expectation.”

  • Share your Deep Truth – Successful branding needs to go beyond surface-level truth, like non-differentiating sales tactics. It also should go beyond “spin”—it’s better to go beyond polishing up a surface-level truth to artificially create more meaning. Only a Deep Truth will truly connect.

  • Scary means you’re doing it right – A deep truth is often a scary truth, but this can be a strategic marketing tactic. The paradox is this: Telling deep truths brings you closer to your core audience (“your people”); but, you might lose some other people along the way (and that’s okay). So you need to conquer your fears if you want to get to a brand’s Deep Truth.

4. An insider’s tips on Twitter marketing

Mindy Brack works for Twitter—in Cincinnati! She’s been working for Twitter for 5 years and recently moved back to Cincy and works remotely from her home. She is currently a Product Specialist focusing on content monetization products.

Here were some of the most noteworthy takeaways from our ‘fireside chat’ with Mindy:

  • Twitter is "the world's largest sports bar" – Cool analogy, right? Mindy explained that Twitter is where people feel comfortable sharing and celebrating with complete strangers on in the moment events.

  • Topics – Twitter will soon be rolling out a new feature called Topics. These will be a new way for users to follow specific events or happenings without needing to manually search for relevant accounts and hashtags. You can read more in our monthly social media updates:

  • Ask questions – Tweets that ask a question get more engagement: 85% more retweets and replies!

  • Brands are welcome – Audiences are very receptive to engaging with brands on Twitter. 79% of users follow a brand.
